Yamunotri is also quite close to the Indo-Chinese border. Yamunotri is a must on every Hindu pilgrim’s itinerary among the four Hindu shrines that constitute the Chardham Yatra in the state of Uttarakhand. It is the source of the holy river Yamuna and can be reached from well-known towns like Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Dehradun.

Gangotri is located at a distance of 300 km from Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand. The ideal time to pay a visit here is between the months of April and November while the temple remains open for devotees between May and November. Summers are cool and winters are freezing cold. The Yamunotri History

The temple and the location open annually on the auspicious day of the akshya-tritya, which usually falls during the last week of April or the first week of May. The temple always closes on the sacred day of Diwali mid-October – first week of November, with a brief ceremony, the temple staff returning to their villages. For the remainder of the time, the valley is enveloped in silence and covered in a white sheet of snow. According to the legend, ancient sage Asit Muni had his hermitage here. Throughout his life, he bathed in both the Ganga and Yamuna; unable to travel to Gangotri in his old age, a stream of Ganga appeared opposite Yamunotri for him.

“The Champasar Glacier (4421 m), located directly beneath the Banderpoonch mountain, is the birthplace of the Yamuna. It is the daughter of the Sun deity, Surya, and consciousness, Sangya. Kalinda Parvat, the mountain next to the river source, is named for her father. Surya is also known by the name Kalinda. Yamuna is well-known for her frivolity, which is said to have grown because, according to a popular tale, Yamuna’s mother was unable to look her brilliant husband in the eye.
